Hi-dilly-ho :

Is there, these days, a hardware recommendation as far as :

- Motherboard processor brand and type ?
- Video card brand and type ?

Happy 2006 to all

Hi,

I would suggest looking at HyperThreading and DualCore technologies, as some parts of EASE already support multiple threads (Vision, AURA etc.). It also makes the PC more responsive during heavy calculations.

I have no personal preference for Intel or AMD. Our signal processing DLLs are from Intel though and they will be slightly faster on their processors. On the other hand AMD's hardware is usually less expensive and noisy at the same processor speed.

I don't see any particular need for a 64Bit OS right now, although the upgrade path should be kept in mind. If you don't need more than 2 GB RAM, there is no need for 64Bit Windows. Not all drivers are stable yet, supporting software is rare as well.

Also you may want to look at a fast PCI Express graphics card, as we have developed some interesting ideas about how to speed about lengthy raytracing calculations.

If the budget allows it even the 2x option comes to mind, nVidia calls it SLI, ATI calls it CrossFire. There are various boards allowing for combining 2 graphics cards already, and you can even add the second card some time later.

For EASE and other RAM-intensive applications make sure you have a fast enough bus for RAM access. Nowadays, this seems to be more limiting than the actual processor frequency.
