Dear all,

I am an average user for Ease v4.1 and a new user for Rhino 3D.
Currently, I have a Rhino model and encountered a difficulty to export the .3dm file into Ease.

I have tried these few attempts but failed.
1. Export .3dm into .dxf from Rhino, import the .dxf into Ease.
2. Export .3dm into .dwg from Rhino, used a converter to change to .dxf and import the .dxf into Ease.

The results were messy, only showed some vertices and edges.

Can any experts advice me the correct methods and procedures?
If you had a .3dm file, how would you approach this?

Thanks alot.

Rgds,
Henry

Hi Henry,

Can you give us more details about the actual problem you are having? What fails? When in the process does the problem occur? Are there any error messages, etc.

Bruce has an excellent tutorial on .dxf import on his web site, I'd recommend it as a good starting point for anyone using the .dxf import function.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the link.

Well... when i tried to export the 3D model .3dm from to .dxf in Rhino. And thereafter, import the .dxf file into Ease. The whole importing process was fine, no error messages in Ease. However, the imported results i got in Ease was only a couple of vertices and lines in the model.. and it makes no sense relating to the shape 3D model i have. The vertices are all over the shop.

The 3D model was drawn in Rhino and i've been trying to importing to .dxf and make it work in Ease.

Should the model only be drawn and exported in Autocad and not other 3D softwares?

Rgds,
Henry

Hi Henry,

Sound's like you need to explode the .dxf file further before importing it. EASE can't import what in AutoCAD are called 3D meshes. Your model must be constructed of 3D faces or 3D polylines. Again, I'm using AutoCAD's terms, but the .dxf file format is pretty generic and Rhino should have the equivalents.

Be sure to also check mark the "Collect Scattered Faces" option in the Import set up window a this will minimize the number of faces imported into EASE. Otherwise you may have tens of housands of faces and a model that calculates very slowly.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the advice. I will continue to try further.

However, it seems that it's a better approach to construct the 3D model in AutoCad instead of other 3D softwares to make things easier when exporting into Ease.

Rgds,
Henry
